Market Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to help you get familiar with the current poetry publishing scene. You may be surprised to find, for instance, that while many poets teach at universities, poetry magazines are often unaffiliated with a university and are grassroots operations. Over the course of the semester, take time to learn about several different poetry magazines (some of which you can find in White Library). Poet’s Market, which is in the reference section of the library, is an invaluable resource for this. Choose three journals from Poet’s Market that look like they might be a good fit for your poetry and send them each a letter requesting a sample issue. Once you get these, read them and decide which one you want to submit your poems to. Prepare a submission according to their guidelines and then turn it into me before sending it off. While you will mail your submission in a regular, #10 envelope, put everything in a 9×12 envelope when you turn it into me. This envelope should include the following:

  • A list of the three journals from which you requested sample issues
  • The sample issue of the journal to which you are submitting your poems
  • The submission guidelines they sent you or a photocopy of the appropriate page in Poet’s Market
  • A very professional cover letter (look at the guidelines in Poet’s Market if you don’t yet know how to write one of these)
  • A stamped, addressed envelope to the journal
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope
  • The poems you have chosen to submit

I’ll grade this assignment on the professionalism with which you put together your packet—it really has to be perfect—and the discernment with which you chose a journal and selected the poems to submit.
