Visual Interpretation Assignment

Literary artists are not the only ones whose imaginative engagement with the Bible can drive us deeper into its significance. Visual artists likewise interpret Biblical passages in their representations of particular events.

This assignment entails looking carefully, paying close attention to how subtle details can reveal significance. Students in both the sciences and the humanities must develop astute observational skills. This paper provides you with an opportunity to hone these abilities.

Your paper should begin with an introduction that identifies the passage and image you chose, indicates the paradox or insight that you will develop, and states a clear thesis regarding how the image and text relate. You must then substantiate your thesis, using specific details from both the passage and image to explain your interpretation to readers.  These details can elicit feelings and opinions from you, but the details should drive your argument, not your reactions. Simply stating that you found portions of the image “pretty” or “interesting” is inadequate. Rather, you’ll need to demonstrate how particular elements of the image interpret latent aspects of the text, and vice versa. Your conclusion should reflect on the significance of the meaning you think the image reveals in the text. The whole essay should be about three pages long (750-1000 words).
