Persuasive Essay

Write an essay in which you argue for a practice that a particular group of people should adopt. You should define the group, define the telos or goal they aspire to, and argue for a specific practice that can help them achieve that goal. You can write to any number of possible groups, e.g. Instagram users, engineers, students, church members, eaters, etc. Along the way, you will need to engage at least one objection that members of your audience are likely to have.

Choose a topic in which there are multiple reasonable positions.  You will not be able to adequately address the entire debate, but we will work to focus in on key and manageable aspects of it.

Find at least four books or articles from the library databases. At least two should be representative of an opposing viewpoint to the one you will develop (in other words, they represent ranges of perspectives that oppose your main claim in significant ways). You may use “popular” articles or primary sources in addition to the four procured from the databases.

State your position in a clear argumentative thesis statement and then defend your position using clear logic and compelling evidence from your sources.

Consider your opposing audience and address/refute their counterarguments.

Provide paper format, source attribution, and a bibliography page for your sources following proper Chicago style (notes/bibliography).

Rhetorical skills: argumentation, evaluation, summary, analysis, critical thinking, persuasion, and persuasive thesis statement.

Your final essay should be 3-5 typed, double-spaced pages in length (1000-1500 words excluding references).
